Our approach
Transparent planning tools for outdoor material projects.
Groundwork Calculators exists to make the step between field measurements and a material order easier to understand. The tools are intended for homeowners, DIY planners, and anyone who needs an early quantity estimate for an outdoor project. Every calculation runs directly in the browser, with no account and no measurements sent to a server.
How the estimates are made
Reusable formulas convert rectangles, circles, and triangles into area, combine additions and exclusions, then use finished depth to calculate volume. Where a result includes estimated weight or package count, the tool applies the disclosed representative density or selected product yield. Purchase quantities round upward only after the project total and allowance are calculated.
The calculation functions are checked with automated examples covering mixed shapes, exclusions, unit conversion, layer volumes, fabric overlap, concrete shapes, and whole-package rounding. The full method is documented on How Groundwork Calculators Work.
What the allowance means
The displayed allowance is a planning buffer for ordinary measurement variation, small spills, settlement, trimming, or irregular edges, depending on the material. It is not a universal compaction factor or a guarantee that every project needs exactly that percentage. Product moisture, gradation, site preparation, installed density, and local package sizes can change the final quantity.
How to use the result
Use the estimate to compare products and prepare supplier questions. Before purchasing, confirm the product specification, coverage or yield, sales increment, delivery access, and final quantity with the supplier. Structural, drainage, frost-sensitive, or code-regulated work may require project-specific guidance from an appropriate professional or local authority.
Editorial approach
Our guides focus on measurement, material selection, and ordering decisions that support the calculators. Content is reviewed when its related tool or planning guidance changes, and materially reviewed guides show that date. We avoid presenting planning ranges as universal specifications and distinguish calculator estimates from supplier, manufacturer, engineering, or local requirements.
Reference values
Standard geometric and unit relationships are separated from variable material assumptions. Representative densities or package yields are labeled where used. If an authoritative product, supplier, manufacturer, or local specification is available, it should replace the generic planning value.
Corrections and accountability
